What is Pledging?

The pledge process is an 8-week educational program. We aim to integrate pledges into the chapter by introducing them to our culture and joining their journeys towards achieving individual personal and professional goals.

You will:

  1. Study the teachings of the Fraternity,

  2. Collaborate with your pledge class to organize and host multiple public and private events,

  3. Meet and network with current collegiate Brothers and alumni,

  4. Get a better sense of whether Alpha Kappa Psi is a right fit for you.

“Definitive”

If I could use one word to describe my pledging/rushing process, it would be “definitive.” I say this because, as a transfer student, I had no idea what to expect as I was starting the semester at UBC. AKPsi allowed me to experience such a transformative adjustment that defined not only what my life would be like at this university, but also who I am as an individual. With that, I am incredibly grateful to have met the brothers and gone through the entire process with my fellow pledges because now, I have a place at UBC where I feel I truly belong. The pledge process pushed me to persevere in completing the different tasks assigned to my pledge class thereby allowing me to grow more not only as an individual, but also a team player. With this I have come to see this group as my family and I would not want anyone else by my side as we go through the next few semesters together here at UBC. As cliche as it sounds, know that I truly mean it.

“Discovering”

Pledging for Alpha Kappa Psi was an experience that I have never encountered in any other place. I would say that it was the closest replication of the corporate world on campus. The pledge process challenged my ability to work in a team of ambitious individuals and manage tasks under time pressure. Everyone in my pledge class was on the same boat, and it was important for all of us to cooperate to be successful as a team — excluding others to succeed on your own does not get you or the pledge class far. Through pledging for AKPsi, I learned that I can bring in optimism even during the toughest times and that people appreciate that aspect about me. Whenever I felt stressed and overwhelmed, the support of active brothers and pledges have helped me overcome these obstacles and understand what brotherhood truly means. Hence, these experiences have ultimately led to my personal and professional development beyond the pledge process.

“COMMUNITY”

Pledging AKPsi will remain as one of the most memorable university experiences I had so far. Throughout the process, I not only made meaningful connections and friendships, but also came to understand myself better as I was pushed outside my comfort zone and was inspired to lead and develop. As a transfer student, pledging AKPsi during my first semester at UBC helped me find a community that motivates me and that I can depend on. I’m thankful for all the amazing people I met through AKPsi and I look forward to being a part of this brotherhood.

“unity”

The ups of my process were being able to connect with pledges and being able to know different people from different backgrounds. Also being able to sit down with brothers in the coffee chats allowed me to connect to the brotherhood that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to. I was able to get meaningful advise from brothers with my academic and professional careers that I didn’t really think was possible. Moreover, during the midcourt and high court process, I really liked how we were preoccupied with things to do that helps us with our collaborative skills and as well as creating a product from scratch. This allowed us to see our potential and hat we can do as a group if we just work and put our minds to it.
